Q. Why did you start Scriptorium Press?

It's hard to find information about topics of interest to technical writers. And from our own experience, this is because publishers aren't particularly interested in publishing these titles. So we decided to launch an imprint whose entire focus is on providing information that technical writers and other content creators need.

Q. What type of books does Scriptorium Press publish?

Scriptorium Press books focus on topics of interest to technical publishing professionals. For example, the imprint's first book, Technical Writing 101, explains how to plan and write technical documentation. Our other publications include The WebWorks Publisher Cookbook, the first third-party reference on Quadralay's WebWorks Publisher 6. We also publish self-study materials on WebWorks Publisher 6, FrameMaker 6, and FrameMaker 7.

Q. I've got an idea for a book. Will you publish the book?

Scriptorium Publishing does accept proposals from writers. To consider your idea, we need a proposal with the following information:

  • Your name and qualifications for writing on the topic.
  • Title of the book.
  • Size (number of pages).
  • Basic book outline.
  • Who would buy this book?
  • How would you market to the people who would buy this book?

Send proposals to books@scriptorium.com.

Q. How does Scriptorium Press distribute the books and self-study materials it publishes?

Scriptorium Press sells its books and self-study materials directly to the public through the Scriptorium Publishing web site, which includes descriptions of all the books and a link to our shopping cart . We accept checks, MasterCard, VISA, and American Express.

If you prefer to order by phone, you can reach us Monday through Friday at 919-481-2701, ext. 101 or 103 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Eastern Time.

Many Scriptorium Press books have International Standard Book Numbers (ISBNs) and are registered in Books in Print, so they can be ordered through your local bookstore. Online sellers such as amazon.com and bn.com carry some titles. Bookstores can request information about pricing and availability by sending mail to books@scriptorium.com.

Q. What publishing tool does Scriptorium Press use?

FrameMaker. Next question, please.

Q. I'd like to review one of your books for either a publication or as a possible textbook. Do you provide review copies?

We provide Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format (PDF) files of the table of contents and a sample chapter for each book we publish. The sample files are on the pages that describe each book; see the links in the upper left corner of this page.

Please read the sample PDF files for the book, and then request a review copy. Send pertinent details to books@scriptorium.com about the publication for which you plan to write the review, such as the name, target audience, type of publication (magazine, newspaper, trade publication, and so on ), the medium in which it is produced, and the circulation. We'll also need your name, address, and qualifications as a reviewer. If you want to review the book for use as a textbook, please send us information about your college or university, including the class or classes in which the book might be used and how many students attend these classes each year.

Q. I'd like to license your training materials. Whom should I contact?

Please contact us at sales@scriptorium.com.

Q. What is your return policy?

We accept returns of books (not including printed workbooks) within three weeks of purchase. Please contact books@scriptorium.com before returning a book. Returns must be in new condition, preferably still sealed in the plastic wrapper. We do not refund postage on returned books.

We do not accept returns of workbooks or self-study materials--printed or on CD. We will, however, exchange defective items for the same title.

Q. Do you plan to update The WebWorks Publisher Cookbook for version 7 and later?

At this time, we aren't planning to update the Cookbook for later versions of WebWorks Publisher, partially due to licensing restrictions from Quadralay.
