Survey Says...

We'd like to thank all the Illuminations subscribers who participated in our online survey in January. We were delighted by the quality (and volume) of your responses.

The survey showed growing interest in XML and XSL, so it confirmed our plans for an XSL in Publishing class. In the second half of 2005, we will teach the course as a public class and as a customized private class. Subscribe to Illuminations, and we'll let you know when we schedule the course; you can also contact training@scriptorium.com for more information.

If you're one of the many respondents who is considering an XML-based workflow, we recommend our XML and Structured Authoring class. In addition to covering basic XML tagging, the class helps you evaluate whether XML makes sense for your environment. We look at what problems you can (and can't!) solve with XML. This class is especially appropriate for managers and team leads.

The survey responses showed continued interest in both the unstructured and structured versions of FrameMaker 7. We offer classes, workbooks, and consulting on both. (See the next story for more information about our upcoming FrameMaker courses.)

And the Winner Is

Survey participants were eligible to win a random drawing for a $200 gift certificate from our online store. Congratulations to the winner, Robert Rodriguez.

Spring Training Dates

Our public classes for this spring are as follows:

The unstructured FrameMaker classes in February and March are almost full. There is one seat left in the Accelerated Introduction class, and two in the Template Design class. Register soon!

To see all of our public training dates for 2005, check out our schedule. Scriptorium Publishing is an Adobe Authorized Training Center. Our instructors are Adobe Certified Experts (ACEs) in FrameMaker 7 and have additional teaching credentials, such as Certified Technical Trainer (CTT+). For more information about our training, contact training@scriptorium.com.

If you register and pay three or more weeks in advance of a class, you're eligible for discounts.

Beyond Conditional Text

To include or exclude information from a particular version of a document, many of you already use conditional text in FrameMaker, build tags in RoboHelp, or similar methods. If you're working with XML-based content, you can also use XML attributes to manage multiple versions of information in one set of source files. Unlike most other versioning methods, however, attributes can handle complex situations such as multiple conditions applied to one chunk of information.

To explain how versioning with XML attributes works, Sarah O'Keefe just posted an article on the WritersUA site: XML Architecture for Customized User Assistance. The article includes two demos that show attribute-based versioning in action.
