Win a Free Copy of Technical Writing 101

Scriptorium Publishing celebrates its tenth anniversary this year, and we're continuing the celebration this month by giving away copies of Technical Writing 101 by Alan Pringle and Sarah O'Keefe.

Enter the drawing

In 2000, the book started out as a supplement to our Technical Writing 101 course. Since then, we've released two editions, and dozens of universities and colleges around the world have adopted the book as a textbook. We've been very pleased with the response Technical Writing 101 has received from the technical writing community, and this giveaway is our way of saying, "Thanks!"

The contest ends on February 16, so enter soon. We will randomly pick 10 winners and contact them via email during the week of February 19. Good luck!

Several of you took advantage of our January promotion: 10 percent off public training. Training enrollment is on the upswing; check out the training schedule in a later story. We're also accepting entries for our March contest.

On the Road Again: Workshops and Conferences

Sarah O'Keefe will be on the road (and in the sky!) quite a bit in the upcoming weeks. She's presenting at conferences and offering hands-on workshops in the United States, Switzerland, and Canada.

On March 14, Sarah will co-present at the San Diego STC monthly meeting. The presentation, XML Trials and Tribulations, will be a case study on transitioning a company from an unstructured documentation system to a documentation system based on XML, structured FrameMaker, and DITA principles.

During the WritersUA conference in Long Beach, CA, Sarah O'Keefe will offer a double-length session, Introduction to DITA (March 26) . The session is a hands-on workshop, so bring your laptop. Sarah is also offering a presentation about Coping with XML Paradigm Shift (March 27) . We'll also have a booth in the exhibition hall.

As part of the conference sponsored by the Trans-Alpine Chapter of the STC, Sarah will teach a workshop about XML-based authoring in Zurich, Switzerland, on April 18. Sarah will also offer the keynote address, Working in a Third-Culture World, on April 19. The address will focus on integrating project teams with contributors from different countries, time zones, and cultures. For more information about the conference, download the conference brochure (PDF, 375 KB).

On April 24–26, Sarah is teaching an XML workshop in Cambridge, Ontario, for the Southwestern Ontario chapter of the STC. The first two days will introduce XML concepts and explain the benefits of XML in a technical publishing workflow. The third day will focus on making the transition from unstructured FrameMaker to XML-based structured FrameMaker.

The Publishing Nightmares Contest Continues

Our March tenth-anniversary promotion is 10 free hours of consulting for the person who offers the most horrific story about your company's documentation workflow.

To enter the contest, fill out our survey, which includes a field for a brief essay describing your current workflow (or challenge). Creativity and a sense of humor will win you bonus points during judging!

The deadline for entering the contest is March 5. We will review all the entries and announce the winner in the March edition of Illuminations.
