Illuminations

Volume 2, Issue 2
February 1999

Greetings. In this issue of Illuminations, the newsletter of Scriptorium Publishing, we let you know about our participation in the CED and WinHelp conferences, and we give you some information about the Enhance plug-in for FrameMaker. We also remind you about our upcoming training.

We welcome your suggestions for newsletter topics. Drop us a line at comments@scriptorium.com.

Conferences, conferences, conferences

To spread the word about Scriptorium Publishing, we're doing the conference circuit this month.

On February 6, we were an exhibiting sponsor at the Conference on Entrepeneurship at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business. We enjoyed meeting the folks there. Here's a picture of Sarah O'Keefe chatting with a conference attendee at our booth.

On February 23, Sarah will be a speaker at the WinWriters conference in Seattle. Sarah's presentation, "Using FrameMaker as a Help Authoring Tool," is available online (PDF, 42K). We have also posted a more technical white paper, "Delivering dual-use content" (PDF, 197K), which describes how to set up FrameMaker files to create help features.

FrameMaker and WebWorks training

During the week of March 22, we will offer our 2-day FrameMaker course and our 3-day WebWorks Publisher course in Dallas. We're back in Research Triangle Park for the week of April 12. To register, go to our registration form.

There's still time to get the early registration discount for the April classes: just register by March 10.

Want outlining features in FrameMaker? Try the Enhance plug-in.

If you're looking for Microsoft Word-style outlining features in FrameMaker, Enhance may be the tool for you. Sandybrook Software offers this handy plug-in.

Here's what Terry Smith (terry_smith@sterling.com) told us about Enhance:

I downloaded the Enhance tool [today]. It has already, in one afternoon, saved me days of work. (I'm reorganizing chapters, books, sections, everything.) Clearly, this is functionality that should already be in Frame, but that's another story. And the little feature that prints a sample of every style in your catalogs is sooo cool....This tool would ease the transition from Word to Frame because it includes the only Word features I actually miss....I sent a note to my boss begging for this tool. At $150, it's a steal.

And, for the record, neither Terry nor Scriptorium Publishing has any commercial ties to Sandybrook.

(For those of you who want more details, Terry will demo Enhance at the Carolinas FUN meeting on March 11. Check the FUN web page for details.)
