DocFrame 3 Update

We're still working on version 3 of our DocFrame solution. With just a few clicks of the mouse in FrameMaker, you can create XML, PDF, HTML, HTML Help, and JavaHelp output.

Some of you visited our booth at the WritersUA conference last week to see DocFrame demos (more on the conference in a later story). If you haven't seen a demo yet, take a look at this animation, which shows the menu choices you select to create output.

New features in version 3 include:

  • Formatting template that uses default system fonts—you get print- and PDF-ready documents without the expense of purchasing additional fonts.
  • Fully downloadable package from our online store—you get everything you need (including templates, documentation, and FrameMaker workbooks) as a download without shipping costs or delays.

As with all versions of the DocFrame solution, you get a structure well-suited to technical manuals, excellent documentation that clearly explains how to create and customize all forms of output, and support via phone or email. You can create structured documentation and online outputs in minutes, not months.

For more information about DocFrame, contact sales@scriptorium.com. We will make more announcements about availability in future issues of the newsletter.

Spring and Summer Schedule: Classroom and Web-Based Training

We've got a full schedule this spring and summer for both classroom- and web-based training:

Classroom:

Web-based:

You can review our complete 2006 schedule and register for classes in our online store.

Our web-based training lets you eliminate travel costs while still getting many of the benefits of our instructor-led training: small class size, the opportunity to ask questions, and a challenging curriculum that engages you. We'd prefer to see you in person in our North Carolina classroom, but of course we understand that travel may not be feasible for a variety of reasons. If this is the case for you, we hope you'll join us in a web-based class this summer. For more information about training, contact training@scriptorium.com.

For those who prefer to learn FrameMaker at their own pace, we also offer our FrameMaker 7 Workbook Series. You can download the workbooks from our online store for $49.95 each. You get the workbook in PDF format, exercise files, and access to video clips that explain the FrameMaker interface.

I Want My Complete Reference!

We've had a lot of recent inquiries about the availability of FrameMaker 7: The Complete Reference. The publisher's current stock has run out, and we are waiting on their decision about a third printing.

UPDATE (May 4, 2006): FrameMaker 7: The Complete Reference is now out of print. Scriptorium Press plans to republish the book as Publishing Fundamentals: Creating Content with FrameMaker 7 (ISBN 0970473338). Look for the release in the early summer of 2006. Contact books@scriptorium.com for more information.

TrackAccess Webcasts

Our TrackAccess webcasts offer you conference-quality presentations at the comfort of your own desk. TrackAccess continues this spring and summer with the following webcasts:

We've also scheduled more webcasts for the rest of 2006.

Each webcast is only $19.95. Register soon; we limit the number of participants to ensure attendees can ask questions. To participate, you need a web browser with Flash and the ability to play audio on your computer through speakers or headphones. Attendees ask questions through a chat interface.

Conferences: WritersUA and STC

Sarah O'Keefe and Matt Arnold just got back from attending the WritersUA conference in Palm Springs, California. Here are some conference highlights:

  • Pundits panel including Sarah O'Keefe.
  • RoboHelp is not dead, but WinHelp is (Chuck Martin's conference blog).
  • Brian Walker's 508 presentation.
  • Tramway ride, which Matt and Sarah took Wednesday afternoon after several recommendations from other conference attendees.
  • Eight Adobe representatives attended, including the product manager for FrameMaker and RoboHelp, the new FrameMaker Evangelist (RJ Jacquez, whose name should be familiar to many who read this newsletter), a couple of product marketing managers, and the RoboHelp engineering manager.
  • MadCap vs. Adobe.

At the conference, Sarah gave two presentations. You can download PDF versions of the handouts:

For the upcoming STC conference in Las Vegas (May 7–12), Sarah O'Keefe will be part of a panel discussion on Managing Implementation of Structured Authoring and will offer a presentation about Integrating Structured FrameMaker and DITA.

Also, Sarah's bleeding-edge session on InDesign and XML was just added to the schedule (May 10 at 10:30 a.m.), and she will participate in the trends panel on May 10 at 8:30 a.m. If you're attending the conference and would like to schedule a meeting with Sarah, please contact her at sales@scriptorium.com.
