Friend or Foe? Web 2.0 |
|
Scriptorium has posted a new white paper, Friend or Foe? Web 2.0 in Technical Communication (PDF, 1.7 MB).
At first, the Internet was a medium for distributing knowledge. Content flowed from the author to anyone that could navigate to a website. With the rise of Web 2.0 technologies, this one-way street of information dissemination added an oncoming lane. Now anyone with an Internet connection can take in information and respond to it through blogs, forums, or even a YouTube video.
What happens now that the roles of author and audience are merging? What happens to the integrity of information? Read the white paper, enjoy the embedded Flash content, and find out. |

Free White Papers with Less Hassle |
|
The days of going to Scriptorium's online store to get free content are gone. All of our wonderful white papers are available for download from our white papers page without registration.
If you miss the added interaction of logging into the online store, you can still download the white papers from there. |

Free Chocolate in Vancouver |
|
Your next chance to meet us (and get some chocolate) is at DocTrain West in Vancouver, British Columbia (May 6–9).
Sarah O'Keefe will be giving a session on What Technical Communicators Need to Know about Flash and an all-day post-conference workshop, Introduction to XSL. Sheila Loring and Matt Arnold will be at the booth, along with the chocolate.
If the chocolate and our expert and witty staff are not enough to grab your interest, how about a $200 discount? Just ask for the Scriptorium discount when you register for DocTrain West by phone. Call +1 978-649-8555 and pay $799 instead of the $999 registration fee.
This offer is valid only on phone registrations received by April 30, 2008. |

Free Chocolate Tour Continues |
|
This June 1–4, Alan Pringle, Sarah, and Matt will be in Philadelphia, PA, for the STC's 55th annual conference. She will present on the complications that arise from paradigm shifts.
On June 21–22, Sarah is off to Birmingham, UK, for STC UK. There won't be any booths at this event, so you will have to settle for Sarah's presentation on organizational paradigm shifts. It's almost as good as chocolate.

Replenishing Our Chocolate Supply in Europe
|
|
Sarah will be at X-Pubs in London, UK, from June 22–24. X-Pubs is a conference that focuses on content and communication technologies. This year's theme is reinventing the customer experience. Presentations will cover subjects such as Web 2.0 and multimedia delivery, eLearning, and getting the most out of user-driven content.
Expect to see more insights on the many-to-many content exchange through Web 2.0 technologies on our blog in the days following this conference. |

The XML Strategist Writes Again! |
|
Take a look at Sarah's latest article from the April issue of Intercom, where she discusses the costs of implementing the free XML-based architecture, DITA. There are several things to consider when choosing a DITA solution, including assessment of your content model and the skill set of your staff.
Sarah's conclusion? "DITA may be free, but it's not cheap."

Intercom is a publication of the Society for Technical Communication. |
