Illuminations

Volume 2, Issue 5
May 1999

Greetings. In this issue of Illuminations, the newsletter of Scriptorium Publishing, we announce that Sarah O'Keefe will soon be among the Dummies. We also tell you about our new WebWorks Publisher/carrot cake tutorial and Sheila Loring's presentation at the STC national conference. And don't forget about our upcoming training.

We welcome your suggestions for newsletter topics. Drop us a line at comments@scriptorium.com.

Finally! A Dummies book for us!

The Dummies division of IDG Books has signed Sarah O'Keefe to write FrameMaker for Dummies. After seven years of wrestling with FrameMaker, Sarah plans to share the tips and tricks she's learned. Look for it in bookstores and at amazon.com this fall.

For the love of carrot cake: check out our HTML tutorial for WebWorks Publisher 2000

We've written a tutorial to show new users of WebWorks Publisher 2000 how to create basic HTML output. The tutorial will be posted to Quadralay's web site, but for those who want a sneak preview now, here are the files (zip file, 300K). The tutorial will show you how to use some of WebWorks Publisher's powerful features--and it will also give you a great carrot cake recipe. (Download the files to see what we mean!)

In the near future, we plan to write tutorials that explain other WebWorks Publisher formats, including WinHelp, HTML Help, and WebWorks Help. Stay tuned for those.

Sheila Loring's single-sourcing presentation at the STC annual conference

Did you catch Sheila Loring giving her presentation about single-sourcing at the STC annual conference earlier this week? If not, you can read her paper (PDF, 160K) and PowerPoint presentation (PDF, 160K) about using WebWorks Publisher to create hardcopy and online documentation from a single set of FrameMaker files. These files will also be posted on the STC 46th Annual Conference web page, along with other speakers' presentation handouts.

Sheila tells us that the conference featured several presentations about single-sourcing, mostly on theory and methodology. Next to XML, single-sourcing is the next trend in technical communication. Now that most companies are producing both print and online documentation, many technical writers feel that they don't have the time or resources to write and maintain dual sources of information. As a result, writers have convinced their companies to look seriously at single-sourcing. In fact, the trend is so strong that next year there may be an entire conference on single-sourcing.
