IXgen Makes Indexing in FrameMaker a Joy

Well, indexing is never really a joy. But the IXgen plug-in can make it much easier, faster, and more complete. Karen Taylor Brown, Senior Technical Writer, uses IXgen to index many of our clients' publications, and she shares her knowledge of this tool in IXgen: Taming the Indexing Editing Process in FrameMaker (PDF, 145K).

Cure for the Anchored Frame Blues

FrameMaker users, rejoice! Technical Writer and Consultant Sheila Loring has some information about a plug-in that can eliminate those anchored frame blues.

When you import a graphic into your FrameMaker document without first inserting an anchored frame, the results can be unattractive. The default anchored frame properties place the frame below the current line, make it left aligned, and force the frame inside the column. If you don't like these settings, you have to change the anchored frame properties every time you import a graphic. This can be annoying and time-consuming if your document has many graphics.

ImpGraph cures the anchored frame blues. Bruce Foster developed this PC plug-in to let you change the default anchored frame and graphic runaround properties. The program is a .dll file that you place in the fminit/Plugins directory. In FrameMaker's Special menu, the plug-in creates a new menu choice called Import Graphic Preferences. Before you import graphics, modify the graphic preferences. Your settings will be stored in an .ini file so that when you create a new document, the previous anchored frame and runaround preferences still apply.

Preferences include the following:

Anchoring Position--Below Current Line, At Top of Column, At Bottom of Column, or At Insertion Point

Alignment--Left, Center, Right, Side Closer to Binding, or Side Farther from Binding

Cropped or Floating

Runaround Properties--Run Around Contour, Run Around Bounding Box, Don't Run Around, or Gap size

ImpGraph is available from the FrameUsers web site on the Power Tools II page. Select the Bruce Foster tab to find ImpGraph and other plug-ins Foster developed. If you're thrilled with ImpGraph and want to receive upgrade notices or install it on several computers, the registration fee is a mere $10. Try it out. You might be inspired to throw money at the feet of Bruce Foster

Two Conferences, Two Coasts

Sarah O'Keefe, President of Scriptorium Publishing, taught a preconference workshop and gave two presentations in San Diego at the 2000 FrameUsers Conference . Her presentation notes are published in free white papers: Can WebWorks Publisher Standard Edition Save You Money? (PDF, 110K) and Single-Sourcing with FrameMaker and WebWorks Publisher (PDF,145K). After suffering through sunny California (well, she did pick up a cold on the flight to San Diego), Sarah will be in sunny Orlando on December 5 for the InfoProducer Conference. She will give two presentations on single sourcing.
