Our
Holiday Gift to You: Free Access to Publishing Fundamentals: FrameMaker
7
|
|
Adobe recently launched a hosting service for secured documents.
We are testing Adobe
Document Center as a way to distribute our reference books in
PDF format.
Between now and the end of 2006, Publishing Fundamentals: FrameMaker
7 is available for free as a secured PDF.
You can see the entire book, but there are a few catches:
- You cannot print or copy the PDF file.
- You need Acrobat Reader 7 or later.
- Access to the PDF file will be turned off on December 31, 2006.
To access the file, follow these steps:
- Go to adobe.com
to set up your (free) Adobe ID if you don't already have one.
(In theory, you can set up the ID when you click on the link in
the PDF file, but this did not work for us.)
- With that ID, log in at the Adobe
Document Center, which requires you to accept terms and conditions
and possibly verify your email address again.
In our testing, it has taken an hour or more for Adobe to send
the email for verifying your email address (even if you already
have an Adobe ID).
- Click on this link to open the PDF (6.5 MB):

FrameMaker 7
We hope that Adobe streamlines the account setup process in the
future; unfortunately, it's a significant barrier right now. Feel
free to direct any questions and comments about the technology to
Adobe.
Beyond the account setup issues, Document Center may allow us to
provide additional content in PDF format. Let
us know what you think about accessing documents this way. Would
you like for us to make more content available this way? Would you
be willing to pay for continued online access to this or other books?

We're
Almost Ten Years Old!
|
|
In 2007, Scriptorium Publishing will celebrate its tenth birthday.
(That's hard for us to believe, too!) Sarah O'Keefe started Scriptorium
in 1996, and she incorporated the company as Scriptorium Publishing
Services, Inc., in January 1997.
We thank you for helping us reach this milestone. Look for details
about our anniversary specials and giveaways in future issues of
Illuminations.

Our New Online Calendar
|
|
We just implemented an online
calendar that includes our training dates, TrackAccess
webcasts, and conference presentations. We hope you'll find the
search and filter features useful.
We've also included information about upcoming events on our revamped
home page. The updated
page includes the latest entries from our blog, Palimpsest.
Next year, we intend to do some more remodeling of our web site
to ensure visitors can easily locate the details about our training,
events, and services.

Training
in 2007
|
|
We've got several classroom- and web-based courses scheduled for
early 2007. Our web-based training lets you eliminate travel costs
while still getting many of the benefits of our instructor-led training:
small class size, the opportunity to ask questions, and a challenging
curriculum that engages you.
For more information about online or classroom training, contact
training@scriptorium.com.

Looking
Ahead: WritersUA Conference
|
|
Registration has opened for the WritersUA
conference in Long Beach, CA, on March 2528, 2007. In
past years, the quality of information offered at the WritersUA
conference has been top notch, so the conference is definitely worth
considering while you're working on your budget for next year.
We will have our booth in the exhibition hall during this conference,
and Sarah O'Keefe will offer the following sessions:
Hope to see you in Long Beach next March!
