Try it, you might learn something

North Carolina State University has an online quiz to help you identify your preferred learning styles. The assessment only takes a few minutes. Once you get your results, you can review the implications of your learning preferences here.It was no surprise at all to learn that I greatly prefer active learning over reflective learning. Here's the capsule from the article:
- Active learners tend to retain and understand information best by doing something active with it--discussing or applying it or explaining it to others. Reflective learners prefer to think about it quietly first. ["Thinking quietly? Ew.]
- "Let's try it out and see how it works" is an active learner's phrase; "Let's think it through first" is the reflective learner's response. [My coworkers have learned to fear the phrase, "Let's just...anything."]
- Active learners tend to like group work more than reflective learners, who prefer working alone. [Not sure about this one.]
- Sitting through lectures without getting to do anything physical but take notes is hard for both learning types, but particularly hard for active learners. [And now I'm laughing out loud. I am the World's Worst Trainee. While the instructor is doing -- whatever -- I'm busy trying things out and breaking the system.]
