Personality types and tech writing

Monday, January 26, 2009 — posted by Alan Pringle

I've taken the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) test twice in my life: in high school and as part of a team-building exercise for my job in the mid-1990s. Both times, my results were the same--and uncannily accurate.

I'm very certain my personality type (ISTJ, which should come as no surprise to anyone who knows me) has had an impact on my job as a technical communicator and a manager. Craig Haiss over at HelpScribe has an analysis of how some personality types fit in the tech writing world.

By nature, I'm a pretty skeptical person, but I do think the MBTI can be a useful tool to figure out how your contributions can best fit within an organization. It can also help you understand what aspects of your personality may not work so well in particular situations. (I will spare you details on which aspects of my personality require my attention, but I can assure you I know what they are!)
